Statement of faith

What we believe

We are an evangelical Baptist church. Here we share, clearly and briefly, what we believe and teach, together with the Bible passages each point rests on, so that you can read them for yourself.

Who we are

An evangelical Baptist church

We call ourselves “evangelical” because we put the gospel of Jesus Christ and the Bible at the heart of our life and teaching. We call ourselves “Baptist” because we stand in a church tradition that holds to believers’ baptism, the autonomy of the local church, the priesthood of all believers and freedom of conscience.

This statement is a summary of what we believe. It does not replace the Bible; it points to it. We hold firmly to these truths, while showing love and respect to all who follow Christ in other churches, and to every person, whatever their background.

Articles 1–4

God and his Word

1. The Bible

We believe that the Bible, in both the Old and New Testaments, is the inspired Word of God. It was written by people led by the Holy Spirit; it is without error in its original writings, and it is the supreme and sufficient authority in all matters of faith and life. So we read it, teach it and seek to obey it, because it is the living voice of God to every person in every age. Why do we read the Bible?

Every Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for instruction in righteousness

2 Timothy 3:16
  • 2 Peter 1:21
  • Psalm 119:105

2. One God: Father, Son and Holy Spirit

We believe in one living and true God, eternal, the Creator of all things, perfect in his holiness, justice and love. He is one God in three persons: the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, equal in being, glory and power.

We do not believe in three gods, but in one God who has revealed himself in the Bible as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. This is a mystery beyond our understanding, but we accept it because God has revealed it, and we worship him with reverence and joy.

  • Deuteronomy 6:4
  • Matthew 28:19
  • 2 Corinthians 13:14

3. Jesus Christ

We believe that Jesus Christ is the eternal Son, the Word who was with God and was God. He became a man: he was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He is truly God and truly man in one person.

  • He lived a perfect, sinless life, and revealed the Father to us through his words and deeds.
  • He died on the cross as an atoning sacrifice for sinners, bearing the punishment for our sins in our place.
  • He rose bodily from the dead on the third day, victorious over sin and death.
  • He ascended into heaven and is now at the Father’s right hand, where he intercedes for believers; he is the only mediator between God and humanity.
  • He will come again in glory, personally and visibly.
  • John 1:14
  • 1 Corinthians 15:3-4
  • Acts 1:11

4. The Holy Spirit

We believe that the Holy Spirit is God, the third person of the Trinity. He convicts the world of sin and renews the human heart, so that a person is born again. He lives in every believer, teaching, comforting and guiding them, producing in them the character of Christ, and he gives believers gifts to build up the church and to serve one another.

  • Titus 3:5
  • 1 Corinthians 12:7

Our need and God’s salvation

5. Humanity and sin

We believe that God created human beings, male and female, in his own image, so every person has a dignity and worth that can never be taken away. But humanity disobeyed God, sin entered the world, and all people became sinners by nature and by choice.

Sin is not merely a weakness or a small mistake. It is rebellion against the holy God; it separates us from him and puts us under his just judgement, and we cannot save ourselves from it. Yet God did not abandon us: he showed his love by sending his Son to die for us while we were still sinners.

For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Romans 6:23
  • Genesis 1:27
  • Romans 3:23

6. Salvation by grace through faith

We believe that salvation is a gift from God, by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone. We do not earn it by our good works or by religious rituals, but receive it by repenting of our sin and trusting in Jesus Christ as Lord and Saviour.

Whoever believes in Christ is forgiven and justified before God, is born again and becomes a child of God. No one is beyond the reach of this grace, whatever their past. Read the gospel message, simply explained.

For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God.

Ephesians 2:8
  • Mark 1:15
  • John 1:12

The church and our life together

7. The local church

We believe that the church is the body of Christ, and Christ alone is its head. It includes all believers in every time and place, and it is seen in the local church: a community of believers who have been born again and have publicly confessed their faith in baptism, committed together to worship, the teaching of the Word, prayer, fellowship, service and sharing the gospel.

We believe that each local church is self-governing under the authority of Christ and his Word, its members seeking his will together in a spirit of fellowship, while gladly working alongside other churches. Why do we need the church?

  • Acts 2:41-42
  • Ephesians 1:22-23
  • Acts 6:3

8. Baptism and the Lord’s Supper

We believe that Christ commanded his church to observe two ordinances: baptism and the Lord’s Supper.

Baptism is for believers who have professed their personal faith in Christ. It is by immersion in water, as a public witness to their union with him in his death, burial and resurrection.

The Lord’s Supper is a remembrance of Christ’s death for us. Believers share in the bread and the cup, proclaiming his death until he comes and renewing their fellowship with him and with one another.

These two ordinances do not bring salvation; they are acts of obedience to Christ and an expression of the salvation we receive through faith. If you have a question about baptism, we would be glad to talk with you.

  • Matthew 28:19
  • Romans 6:3-4
  • 1 Corinthians 11:23-26

9. The priesthood of all believers

We believe that every believer has direct access to God through Jesus Christ, and so can pray, read the Word and come to God with confidence. Every believer, man or woman, is called to serve God and others with their gifts and to bear witness to Christ in their life. Church leaders are servants who shepherd and teach, not intermediaries between God and people.

But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession

1 Peter 2:9
  • 1 Timothy 2:5
  • Hebrews 4:16

10. Freedom of conscience and religion

We believe that God created human beings free and accountable to him, and that true faith cannot be forced; it is a free response of the heart. So we respect every person’s freedom in what they believe, and we stand up for freedom of conscience and religion for all.

We believe that the church should remain independent of the authority of the state, and that religion should not be imposed by force of law, while we respect the civil authorities and pray for them. We share our faith with love and kindness, and we do not pressure anyone.

  • Matthew 22:21
  • Romans 14:12

Our life and our hope

11. The Christian life and discipleship

We believe that everyone who trusts in Christ is called to follow him all the days of their life. Discipleship is a journey of growth that we share together: we read the Bible, pray, worship God, serve, love one another, and pursue holiness in our homes, our relationships and our work. This love also shows itself in mercy and justice, in respecting the dignity of every person and in protecting the vulnerable.

We do not do this to earn God’s love, but because he loved us first, and it is his Holy Spirit who changes us. Why do we pray?

  • Romans 12:1-2
  • John 13:34-35
  • Galatians 5:22-23

12. Mission

We believe that Christ sent his church to tell all nations the good news, to make disciples, baptise them and teach them to keep his commands. We share this good news in our words, our actions and our love for our neighbours, with respect for every person and without pressure, trusting that it is the Holy Spirit who works in people’s hearts.

  • Matthew 28:19-20
  • Acts 1:8

13. The last things

We believe that Jesus Christ will return personally and visibly in glory, that the dead will be raised, and that God will judge the world in righteousness. Those who have trusted in Christ will live with him for ever in God’s presence, where there is no more sorrow, pain or death; but those who reject his grace will remain separated from him for ever.

This hope gives us peace in the midst of hardship, and moves us to live faithfully today and to share the gospel with love.

  • 2 Corinthians 5:10
  • Revelation 21:4
